XY
11 November 2017 – 21 January 2018
The Southland Museum & Art Gallery Niho o te Taniwha, is pleased to present, XY, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by local artist James Yau.
XY represents the axis in design principles, and balancing positive and negative spaces is central to Yau’s work. Yau experiments with the basics of line, colour, and light and has developed a method of drawing which is inspirational and ‘automatic’ (from the subconscious mind) while simultaneously demonstrating high quality observational skills. His gestural line drawings are done with speed and often use one continuous line and these are juxtaposed to strong, bold colours and forms intrinsic in his paintings.
Of Malaysian nationality and Chinese ethnicity, Yau merges eastern and western elements in his art practice with particular emphasis on his multicultural experiences of New Zealand and the wider world.
This exhibition will be on display in the Community Access Gallery, from Saturday November 11 until January 21 2018, at the Southland Museum & Art Gallery, 108 Gala Street, Invercargill.
