Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom ("LEOTC")
The Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom ("LEOTC") project provides support for quality teaching and learning experiences for primary and secondary students enrolled in state, integrated and registered private schools. LEOTC programmes are hands-on, interactive, and enrich the New Zealand Curriculum framework. Learning outside the classroom is an important complement to the learning that happens inside the classroom. It brings learning to life. (1)

The purpose of the LEOTC programme
- To provide hands-on and interactive learning experiences which are memorable and promote the transfer of skills and understandings across learning areas and within the context of students’ everyday lives.
- Provide learning opportunities, within authentic contexts, that could not be made available in the immediate school environment.
- Provide specific rather than general experiences which complement school-based teaching activities.
- Ensure there is pre- and post-visit information and interactive feedback between teachers and providers to support effective learning.
- Ensure good partnerships with schools and classroom teachers which will lead to successful outcomes for all students.
- Support teaching and learning for the diverse range of students’ needs, including incorporating a range of cultural perspectives.
- Provide services aligned to current research of effective teaching support directions for learning set through The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. (2)
